Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

UrgentCare2Go

What is a virtual colonoscopy?

A virtual colonoscopy is a CT-based imaging method that provides detailed views of the colon and rectum to screen for polyps or abnormalities.

Who should consider a virtual colonoscopy?

Adults at average risk for colorectal cancer, or those needing a less invasive screening option, may benefit from this procedure.

How does it differ from traditional colonoscopy?

Virtual colonoscopy is non-invasive, uses CT imaging instead of an endoscope, and typically requires less recovery time.

Is the procedure safe?

Yes, virtual colonoscopy is generally safe with minimal radiation exposure and low complication risk. Your provider reviews any risks beforehand.

Do I need to prepare for the scan?

Preparation usually involves bowel cleansing and following dietary restrictions to ensure clear imaging.

How long does the scan take?

The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes, with additional time for preparation and post-scan review.

Will insurance cover this procedure?

Many insurance plans cover virtual colonoscopy as a preventive screening, depending on age and risk factors.

Can children undergo virtual colonoscopy?

Virtual colonoscopy is primarily recommended for adults; pediatric use is rare and determined on a case-by-case basis.

How soon will I receive results?

Results are typically available within 24–48 hours, and your provider will discuss follow-up recommendations.

Is this procedure painful?

No, virtual colonoscopy is non-invasive and generally comfortable. Some patients may feel mild bloating during the scan.
